Sleeping, Eating & Gaming, Oh My: The Blood Sugar-Blood Pressure-Out for Blood Triangle

This “Safe Stress” ™ Resiliency Shrink Rap ™ started out examining the sleep deprivation epidemic invading the country.  And in short order it expanded to two related social health concerns:  out of control eating and addictive-violent gaming.  Hopefully the message generates a mind-opening balance between lighthearted and heavy-handed.  Enjoy…and feel free to spread the words!

Sleeping, Eating & Gaming, Oh My:
The Blood Sugar-Blood Pressure-Out for Blood Triangle

Now don't be cheap with the need for “Sleep.”
You’ll just be snappy, make folks unhappy
Or you join the mob crashing on the job.
As your memory brain becomes a leaky drain.

And stop pretending, you’re just defending.
It’s hocus pocus:  you cannot focus
As that caffeinated mind races through the grind:
Are you “lean and keen” or more a drama queen?
But my biggest stress:  “All is fine” b.s.

Chorus:

Sleep deprivation, sleep deprivation
A Vampire sucking concentration
Sleep deprivation, sleep deprivation
The iPod for a Zombie nation.

Oft burning the candle is more than a scandal
A lack of sleep feeds body mass creep
As a sluggish mood screams out, “More food!”
Stepping on the scale, it too starts to wail.
Now is your fate a pre-diabetic state?

You need forty winkies, not all those Twinkies
Can fill the lonely part of a hungry heart.
So do that snoozing not quiet boozing
Or raiding the fridge for a late-night binge.

Chorus:

Sleep deprivation and food compulsion
When fried and fries forge a junk mood junction
Sleep deprivation and food compulsion
Heavy eyes “super-size” our population.

All night gaming is mind inflaming:
Does it inspire or trip a brain wire?
For Net addiction is not total fiction:
It’s pretty insane to deaden all your pain.

Excess e-violence and underground defiance
Sow impulse erosion with TNT emotion.
Are we turning a “fun” day into a Ted Bundy?
Alas, the danger goes beyond the stranger…
Bottled rage adds plaque for arterial attack!

Chorus:

Sleep deprivation and tech-obsession
A formulation for mental regression
Sleep deprivation and tech-obsession
Oh not another Newtown procession!

Does sneaking and snacking mean values are lacking, or…
Is a super-sized culture now the main vulture?
With a quarter on the border of a blood-sugar disorder
You’ll need more than Snickers or a kick in the knickers.

If the noble intention is broad health promotion
Then leading a nation means “Shrink Rap” ™ education
For moving brain and bone outside a comfort zone.
When life is on the line work with folks to design
Daring images of self that will reject the shelf.

Chorus:

Sleep deprivation and weighty conditions
Means a decision for a new mission
Sleep education and weighty conditions
We must amend as a nation the US constitution!

See a health pro, begin to let go
Of those excuses and self-abuses:
To escape that rut, get off of your “yes, butt.”
Now exert self-control; start crawling from your hole
Exposing all the lies as you pump those thighs.

We’re at the starting gate…let’s learn to meditate.
Whatever is the matter, stop Mad Hatter chatter.
Within that wired riot discover peace and quiet
Without computer code or that pie ala mode:
Accept failing with grace; don't fail to sculpt your space.
Do know your limits, don’t limit your “No”s!

Chorus:

Health education and self-examination
The amalgamation of mind-body connection
Personal reflection and witty expression
The articulation of a Psycho-humorist ™ mentation.

Don’t stare at your navel, contemplate mind travel
Via synaptic node down a pine-scented road.
Or let sounds of the ocean sing a lullaby potion.
Slowly turn self-censure into dreamy adventure
As old voices inside now drift out with the tide.

And a final thought, as a last resort.
To get seven hours at least sans an Ambien feast
When stress from your head crawls into the bed
As the shadows retreat…now a nightmarish beast.

Despite what you think you’ll need more than a shrink:
Just how do you find – without losing your mind?
Hey, it’s a snap, there must be an app
For a “multi-HYPER-texting ‘n tubeing-always on-Facebooking-
Skype-savvy” exorcist priest?

Closing Chorus:

Relaxation-visualization along with inventive combination
The fun-damental foundation of free-flowing association
Introspective meditation and cutting edge conception
The ingenious inception of Safe Stress ™ intervention.

I’m running out of time; also out of rhyme
So my last dime: embrace the sublime.
When running out of time; also out of rhyme
My one last dime:  embrace the sublime!

Two Stress Resiliency Shrink Raps ™

One trend and two feedback experiences have put me on notice that I need to shift my approach to writing.  I’ve decided to write shorter pieces whenever possible.  Certainly this speaks to the trend of people being increasingly busy in their lives; reading more than ever on the run, having to scan (when not surfing) the waves of info that keeps inundating us all.  As an aside, a friend has decided to call his new media company, “Loud Mouth” ™ Productions.  I recommended the name “Smart Mouth,” but I’ve come to see his wisdom.  Let’s face it; first and foremost you have to be heard above the din.

In addition to another friend questioning my lengthy written essays (and also advising a more strategic utilization of U-Tube; hopefully there will be more coming in the near future from this arena; see the above friend with media company), the encouraging feedback from my recent and newly revised “Stress Resiliency Shrink Rap” ™ (pasted below) has me writing a new generation of “Shrink Raps” or “It Could Be Verse!”
Perhaps I should mention the first lyric, “The Visionary Emperor,” was inspired by a recent encounter with and standing up to a CEO bully.  More to come.

Of course, being psycho-loquacious by nature, I will be channeling my need to explore, elaborate, and extrapolate in a book on Stress Resiliency.  And, already crawfishing a bit, there’ll be an essay on why I believe the Resiliency Rap ™ turned out to be such a compelling piece.  The key factor may prove beneficial for you as I outline the now expanded “Five ‘P”s of Passion Power” – being Purposeful-Provocative-Passionate-Playful along with the synergistic synthesis, being Philosophical.
In addition, I will be sharing some of the insights into my own creative process.  I think it may be of value on your own singular journey.

So here are my two latest poetic excursions.  Enjoy!
Mark
-----------------------
The Visionary Emperor

There once was a man with a vision
Behind every crucial decision.
Enthroned in his tower, the praise that was showered
With a “yes, butt” condition: “Take your mission position
Now submit to my unquestioned power.”
But give him his due; he hadn’t a clue.
You don’t need a rhyme to know that fine line
Between vision and…HALLUCINATION!

Remember...

Dealing day or night
With a mind “black or white”
Blind by ego and might…
If it’s not a fair fight
Do not get uptight.
Before you take flight
Reach out for insight
That defangs a shark’s bite.
And yes, there’ll be fright
Still calmly yet firmly
Stand for integrity.
Why not play with such vanity
Now knowing their plight:  truth is kryptonite.
Once seeing the light…just let them be right.
Much better to ponder these eight words of stealth:
“It consoles them for not being anything else!”**

[** Immortal phrase from Andre Gide, author of The Immoralist:  One must allow others to be right…It consoles them for not being anything else.”]

24/7 SPEED/Stress Resiliency Shrink Rap ™:
Safe Stress Survival Strategies

By Mark Gorkin, "The Stress Doc" ™

Are you the “poster child” for stress and duress?
Should you try Prozac?  Is it time to confess
To Ebay shopping – which may be a warning
When you're clicking madly at three in the morning?

But relax, have no fear...
The Stress Doc is here. So lay worries to rest…
Now listen and learn to Practice Safe Stress! ™

As you sprint to the wire with blood pressure higher
Timeless mind-body tips to heed
For slowing down, getting feet on the ground
And building Natural SPEED – Sleep-Priority-Passion-Empathy-Exercise-Diet.

Now don't be cheap with your need for “Sleep.”

Maximum learning must be REM deep
To be a beauty with mental acuity
Not that snooze-button bashing BLEEP!

For when it comes to daily slumber
All night gaming is dumb and dumber.
You may call me a grouchy old toad:
“Pull the d_ _n plug on ‘just one more’ download.”

Chorus:  When it comes to stress – it’s a lock
Who you gonna get – the Stress Doc!

Do the shadows of consuming insomnia
Now mushroom into munching hysteria?
Does sneaking and snacking mean values are lacking
Or a health disease with vital criteria?

[To savor these “food for thought” questions
Digest this delicious digression:
A search for en-light-ened clarity
Imbued with lingual dexterity
Alas, settles for linguistic perversity –
The neologistic** “insomnobesity” ™.]

** Neologism:  the combining of existing words to make a new, often clever term or buzzword
---------------------

But let us get back to troubles in the sack…
Always “burning the candle” is not just a scandal –
More a waxy attack fueling brain-clogging plaque
That may even nurture dementia!

Beware numbing at night with pie ala mode
Better mind travel down a pine-scented road.
Or let sounds of the ocean sing a lullaby potion
While launching a dreamy adventure.

So, can you get seven hours, at least
Without an Ambien or Bud-Lite feast?
When stress from your head crawls into the bed
And virals as a nightmarish beast...

Despite what you think you’ll need more than a shrink:
How do you find – without losing your mind…
Hey, it’s a snap, there must be an app
For a “multi-HYPER-texting ‘n tubeing-always on-Facebooking-
Skype-savvy” exorcist priest!

Chorus:  Ready to confess – join the flock
Who you gonna get – the Stress Doc!

"P" stands for "Priority"
You can't do it all every day.
Urgent means now but important can wait.
Do you know how to "N & N"? –
Just say "No and Negotiate!"

Now I hope you’ll pardon my asking:
“Must you always be multi-tasking?”
Oh, it’s just me, honey, your Energizer Bunny.
Running from quiet, your life is a riot.
Hmm…what is that “ADD” masking?

Chorus:  Is your life a mess? – you need a rock
Who you gonna get – the Stress Doc!

Another “P”-word is “Passion”
And we’re not talking sex, shoes, or fashion.
Don’t try to impress, better…
Learn to play chess
Or dig, dream, and dance in your garden.

"E" is for the "Empathy"

Found in a caring shoulder.
But all give without take is a big mistake
For now you shoulder a boulder.

Find a stress buddy who knows TLC
Someone honest and self-aware –
One who gives “Tender Loving Criticism”
Yet also takes “Tough Loving Care!”

Chorus:  Doing more with less – better take stock
Who you gonna get – the Stress Doc!

The second "E" is for "Exercise"
Start pumping iron or those thighs.
You may not need SSRIs.
Try thirty minutes of non-stop spin
For your mood uplifting endorphin.

And, finally, "D" is for a healthy "Diet"
Alas, many would rather die than try it.
To manage foods so often craved
Grieve, "let go," and then be brave
Sending diet fads to an early grave.

So eat those fruits and veggies
Try fish oils and soy protein.
For too much fats and sugar
Excess alcohol and caffeine
Is a rollercoaster formula
For an artery-clogged machine.

Chorus:  When it comes to stress – you’re on the clock
Who you gonna get – the Stress Doc!

It's time to end this Shrink Rap
With final tips for you –
"A firm 'No' a day keeps the ulcers away, and the hostilities too."
So to lessen daily woes, "Do know your limits; don't limit your 'No's!"

Ponder this Stress Doc wit and wisdom
Try to live it day after day:
Burnout is not a sign of failure
You simply gave yourself away.

Remember, sometimes less is more
And more is really less.
Balance work and play, faith and love
And, of course...Practice Safe Stress!

24/7 SPEED/Resiliency Shrink Rap ™: Safe Stress Survival Strategies

This poetic/lyrical “SPEED Rap” is an elaboration of an earlier work.  [Actually, I have just coined a new concept – Resiliency Rap ™."]  The three expanded or new areas are:  Sleep, Passion, and Empathy. Audiences are very engaged when I talk about the concept, so I decided to rework a “Shrink Rap” ™ version.  It's a yin-yang mix of light and dark humor and insight.

On a lark, I showed it to a Howard County librarian this am, a total stranger, just for her reaction.  She simply said, "Wow!"  And also thanked me profusely when I gave her a copy and suggested she share it with her colleagues.

Hopefully, you too will be jolted with energy, entertainment, and some enlightenment.

Enjoy!  And feel free to share.

A Case for High Task-Touch-Tolerance Training for Supervisors and Managers

Several events have come together within the last six weeks compelling me to share my thoughts on services/programs that I believe would be of great benefit to colleagues, clients, or employees, especially managers and supervisors.  More specifically, I have seen the clear emotional support, the interactive energy, enthusiastic and open sharing, and morale boost, as well as the “hands on” PRO – Personal-Relational-Organizational – problem-solving benefits of:

a) a two-hour class for a handful of county government managers, and b) an all-day workshop for eighteen “Metro Transit” managers.

Other recent events have demonstrated the impact that motivational-interactive-team oriented programs have on both small (corporate) and large (government) audiences.

Before describing these events, let me mention an excellent resource, a book I am presently reading, by Jane Stevenson and Bilal Kaafarani, Breaking Away:  How Great Leaders Create Innovation that Drives Sustainable Growth – and Why Others Fail, McGraw-Hill, 2011.  According to the authors, innovation is “something unique that delivers true value and is worthy of exchange.”  I believe the below programs/services, in particular, problem solving-support groups and workshops for Managers and Supervisors, clearly meet this criteria.  When a Manager or Supervisor experiences and integrates the value of Stress and Conflict Resiliency and Relaxation, a virtuous cycle spreads throughout their network

The above-mentioned interactive-interconnected-innovative events include:

1) Motivational-Interactive Keynote with a major Fairfax County Govt Department (see testimonials below); the 1.5 hour program for 100 + employees went so well that it quickly spun-off an upcoming June 2013 Stress Resiliency/Practice Safe Stress program for all FCG Department Heads

Hi Mark,

Hope you had a great weekend.

I spoke with Gail this morning and she is absolutely DEE-lighted with the Stress Doc!

[Gail Ledford, Department Director, was going to share her observations with Dept. of Public Work's Director James Patteson.]

WE have had nothing but rave reviews from the staff

“Engaging and Educational”

“Just a note to say how much I enjoyed yesterday’s event at the Government Center.  I think it changed the attitudes of many because not only were we ‘away’ from the office but also having Mark Gorkin as a guest speaker helped everyone connect better….and laugh. Thank you!”

“We are already using some of the tools and suggestions from the training. Our vote is more like this, whether it’s him or similar activities.”

I will be in touch. All the best,

Hi, Mark.

I just wanted to thank you for your presentation today.  I feel that I took away some strategies that I can use to handle stress in my work life (I just changed jobs) as well as in my home life (caring for an ill loved one).  I was a mad scribe and wrote down many of your anecdotes that will serve me well!

2) As a consultant for Business Health Services, led a 2-hour Managing Stress for Montgomery County Govt Managers class; while because of technology-marketing factors numbers were small (three attendees); however, having only three people allowed for an intimate and focused sharing/learning experience; there were substantive cathartic and strategic benefits, along with tangible “take home” plans.  The participants were decidedly less stressed, had a clear problem-solving direction, and were definitely more hopeful.  I believe a regular small group support system for Managers and Supervisors would be invaluable.

3) As a consultant with Business Health Services, led a one-hour class for a major area transportation company, a mind-body, cognitive-alternative health method of dealing with stress, including focusing on styles of self-defeating thinking and the use of a relaxation-visualization exercise (the class was given three times in the day, including for night shift employees).  One of the principals of this transportation company attended all three sessions.  His words:  “You have an inspiring message!”

Hi Doug,

Can we secure the date of April 30 for The Mind & Body Connection?  We would like to have the same 3 sessions as before with the same instructor if possible, (we LOVED Mark!) The times would be: 9:30-10:30am, 11-12 noon and 10-11 pm.

Let me know if that date is okay...thanks!
